Qualified Team Focus, Spain: Ready for their return to the global stage
MIES (Switzerland) - The Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024 lineup is now known and with the game schedule also confirmed, we're checking out the 12 nations bidding for glory at Paris 2024.
We're moving on to Spain who are the fourth highest placed nation in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike.
How they qualified
After missing out on the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 there's no doubt there was palpable relief when Spain booked their return to the global stage by punching their ticket at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2024 in Sopron, Hungary.
However, it was not straightforward, since Spain did endure a double-digit loss to Japan in the middle of wins against Canada and Hungary.
Record at the Olympics
Appearances: 6- 1992 (5th); 2004 (6th); 2008 (5th); 2016 (2nd); 2020 (6th); 2024
Medals: 🥈(2016)
Last appearance
There was a distinct tinge of disappointment for Spain when they bowed out of the competition at Tokyo 2020 in the Quarter-Finals. Having under-performed weeks earlier on home soil at FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021, hopes were high they would bounce back strongly.
They looked on track to do exactly that after going perfect in the Group phase with wins against Korea, Serbia and Canada. However, they were unable to overcome France and missed out on the Semi-Finals and a possible podium place after going down 67-64 in a real tear-jerker.
The Group Phase
The Group A matchup with China is surely going to be one of the must-watch games to watch of the initial phase. Both nations will have their eyes on the immediate prize of top place in the Pool, with the teams having last played each other four years ago at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2020 in Belgrade when China edged a dramatic contest 64-62. Spain are also set to take on arch-rivals Serbia and underdogs Puerto Rico in Group A.
Spain Group Phase games
vs China (July 28)
vs Puerto Rico (July 31)
vs Serbia (August 3)
Players to watch
Classy veteran Alba Torrens will patrol the wings with Maria Conde, while the in-form Maite Cazorla and lightning-quick Queralt Casas will likely lead the way in the backcourt.
Unfortunately, Spain are now planning to be without center Raquel Carrera who suffered a knee injury playing for Valencia Basket Club last month. That makes the addition of Megan Gustafson all the more precious and she will combine in the frontcourt with the experienced Laura Gil.
Qualified Team Focus series
During the coming weeks and months, we will continue to check out all teams ready to step out at Paris 2024 as part of our Qualified Team Focus series. You can already take a look at USA, China and Australia.
