The City of Manila is the capital of the Philippines and its second-most populated city, with close to two million inhabitants. It is one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing cities in Southeast Asia. Located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay, on the island of Luzon, the city has a long and distinguished sports history.
Basketball is the favorite sport of Manila and in the Philippines overall. Most local villages have basketball courts with court markings drawn on the streets, with inter-village leagues held every summer, from April to May.
The two games of the Opening Round for the group of the Philippines will be played in the Philippines Arena.
The Philippine Arena is the world's largest indoor arena with a maximum seating capacity of 55,000. It was inaugurated in July 2014 at Ciudad de Victoria, a 140-hectare tourism enterprise zone in Bocaue and Santa Maria, Bulacan, about 30 kilometers north of Manila. It was back then the largest mixed-use indoor theater in the world. The 36,715-m² fully air-conditioned venue is a one-sided, bowl-shaped Arena featuring a theatre-style stage at one end and operates as a multi-use sports, religious events, and concert venue. The FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2018 was played there and The Philippine Arena hosted Gilas Pilipinas' games in the sixth FIBA World Cup Qualifier window in February 2023.
