The Special Capital Region of Jakarta, the official name of the city, is the largest city in Southeast Asia, lying on the northwest coast of Java, the world’s most populous island. Jakarta is the heart of Indonesia, on all levels, with a population of over 10 million inhabitants.
Although a wave of immigrants from China brought basketball with them for the first time in the 1920s, the sport is relatively new in this country. The first top club basketball game between two Indonesian teams took place in 1982 with the creation of Kobatama, the ancestor of the National Basketball League. Since then, the game has grown rapidly and now interest is very strong in Indonesia. Most recently, in the summer of 2022, the country hosted the FIBA Asia Cup with great success.
The Indonesia Arena is a brand new multipurpose indoor arena. Currently under construction at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Sports Complex in Jakarta, it is set to open in June 2023. GBK is an exclusive area dedicated for sports facilities and this Arena will be the largest in the country.
Based on a green building concept, the Arena has adopted a weaving philosophy, a representation of the Indonesian people's spirit of Gotong Royong, diversity united to form a strong nation. It was designed with the same spirit, just like woven baskets, the principle of overlapping webbing is translated into the form of a building mass that is stacked on top of each other with a unique pattern variation.
Designed specifically for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Indonesia Arena will also be used for future sports events, entertainment, and conventions. The fans attending the event can expect nothing short of a premium and state-of-the-art modern experience.
